Segment Updates

EB 12 Mile Ramp to NB I-75 Closed 12/9/2021

The ramp from eastbound 12 Mile Road to northbound I-75 will be closed on Thursday, December 9th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. as crews repair a guardrail that was recently damaged.

High Friction Surface Treatments on I-75

Throughout the project corridor there are multiple areas where we have added an additional layer of safety, called a High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST). This treatment is applied directly to the roadway to improve pavement friction along specific curves as a safety measure. HFST is used throughout the country and has proven to be effective. A couple locations where this layer of safety has been applied on the roadway is on I-75 at the Big Beaver Road curves and th e 9 Mile Ro ad c urves.    Drivers notice only a minimal difference in the feel of the road as they travel through these areas, however the roadway surface visually stands out as the treatment can change the color of the roadway  – as illustrated in the image below.

Currently under construction, o ne of the major aspects of the I-75 Modernization project is the 4-mile long drainage tunnel.  This tunnel is 100 feet underground and will run along I-75's northbound service drive between 8 Mile and 12 Mile Roads.  This tunnel will provide storage and conveyance to help avoid future flooding in the depressed portion of the freeway.  Stormwater collected in the tunnel will be screened to remove debris and allow the water to flow to treatment facilities. These facilities will provide treatment and additional screening to ensure the discharged water is safe for the public.

Building of the tunnel began in the Fall of 2019 and is scheduled to continue through 2022.  The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), named Eliza, was launched last year and has now traveled over 6,205-feet north from the I-696 Shaft Site (northeast corner of the I-75/I-696 interchange), placing her near Farnum Avenue and the northbound service drive intersection.   For more information on Eliza and the need/benefits of the drainage tunnel please visit our Project Highlights page http://modernize75.com/Project-Highlights-Tunnel .

BACKGROUND:

Originally planned to replace the existing interchange at I-75/12 Mile Road, MDOT and OCP have revised the design to incorporate a diverging diamond interchange  (DDI). This innovative design will improve safety and traffic flow at this busy interchange. To build a majority of the DDI in one season, 12 Mile Road will be closed to through-traffic under I-75 from March to November 2022. During the rebuilding, local access will be maintained to businesses.

Segment 3 of the I-75 modernization project is a multi-year rebuilding effort on more than 5 miles of pavement, replacing bridges, installing retaining and noise walls, and building a state-of-the-art drainage tunnel between M-102 (Eight Mile Road) and 13 Mile Road.  To view the public meeting materials after the event and to learn more about the I-75 modernization project, visit www.modernize75.com .

Memorial Day Weekend 2021

Did you know: Tunnel Edition

Once completed, how does the Drainage and Storage Tunnel work?

Storm water is collected from the I-75 freeway and service drives in a network of pipes that direct flows into seven "drop shafts" (large pipes).  These shafts connect to the tunnel below, where the storm water then flows north to a new pump station just northeast of the I-75 and 12 Mile Road interchange.  The pump station lifts the water nearly 100-feet and discharges it into the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner (OCWRC) Retention Treatment Facility.

For more information on the drainage tunnel please visit our Project Highlights page http://modernize75.com/Project-Highlights-Tunnel.

8 Mile Road to Shevlin Avenue Flyover Video – April 2021

In this flyover you can see the work going into the rebuilding of the southbound lanes of I-75 from 8 Mile Road to Shelvin Avenue.  With all traffic now using the recently rebuilt northbound lanes, crews are able to work on the southbound lanes and service drive to reopen this area by the end of November 2021.  This also gives crews an opportunity to complete the painting on structures like the Meyers Avenue Bridge and Harry Avenue Pedestrian Bridge that were rebuilt in 2020.  This video also gives a great view of the progress being made on the Shevlin Avenue Bridge that is set to reopen this summer.

Extensive bridge work requires closing I-75 this weekend in Oakland County and Detroit

Did You Know: "Brass In, Brass Out" Safety Moment

A Brass In, Brass Out board tells how many people are in the tunnel, should there be a safety issue. As crew members arrive to the tunnel, they move their assigned "Brass" from the "Out" position, to the "In" position.  This helps the site safety team know how many people are in the tunnel at any given time and allows for the team to monitor for crew limits based on space.

Harry Avenue Pedestrian Bridge Progress Video 2020

We recently shared footage of the progression of the vehicular bridge over I-75 at Meyers Avenue; in this video you can see the progress of a pedestrian crossing.  The Harry Avenue Pedestrian bridge was demolished in the spring of 2020 and rebuilt for use by the fall.  The pedestrian bridges throughout the corridor are a vital part of the community, and we are very happy to see the new structures being used.

Meyers Avenue Bridge Progress Video

As part of the corridor modernization, vehicle and pedestrian crossings are being replaced.  In this Meyers Avenue bridge video, you can see the construction progression from the existing structure demolition, to rebuilding the new structure, and finally reopening the bridge to traffic.

What is coming for 2021 Construction Season

The 2021 construction season has a lot of improvements in store throughout the project! Although the schedule is subject to change, some of the planned work planned for next year includes:

North of M-102 (8 Mile Road) to I-696:

  • The southbound lanes of the I-75 freeway and the southbound service drive will be rebuilt
  • Shevlin Avenue Bridge will be rebuilt
  • Pedestrian Bridges to be rebuilt: Highland Avenue and Browning Avenue
  • The drainage tunnel work will continue
  • Sound wall construction along southbound I-75

To achieve this, southbound I-75 traffic from I-696 to 8 Mile Road will be shifted to the newly completed northbound lanes. The configuration will mimic what was done in 2020 with a traffic shift to maintain two lanes in each direction.

North of I-696 to Coolidge Highway:

  • Rebuilding southbound I-75 from north of 13 Mile to north of 12 Mile roads, including replacing the southbound I-75 bridge over 13 Mile Road
  • The 11 Mile Road vehicular bridge and Bellaire pedestrian bridge will be rebuilt
  • Sound wall construction work will be continued in the vicinity of Wattles Road
  • Signal installation and completion of the diverging diamond interchange at Big Beaver and 14 Mile Roads
  • Landscaping from 13 Mile Road to Coolidge Highway
  • Final (Punch-list) items to complete the section between 13 Mile and Coolidge Highway

An open house is tentatively scheduled for February 2021 to primarily address the 2021 active construction work, ahead of the construction season, where additional details will be provided.  Stay connected with the project by following us on Facebook and Twitter or subscribe to our email list for announcements http://www.modernize75.com/find-information/contact-us/.

MDOT video highlights unique features on I-75 modernization project in Oakland County

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) today released a video on YouTube updating some of the state-of-the-art advancements included on the current I-75 modernization project in Oakland County.

In addition to a brief overview, the I-75 modernization project video explains the benefits of the new diverging diamond interchanges (DDI) being built at 14 Mile and Big Beaver roads. Several DDIs have recently been built in the state, including one in Oakland County at the I-75/University Drive interchange in Auburn Hills. MDOT has found these interchanges improve driver safety by eliminating conflict points, such as turning in front of oncoming traffic.

The most unique characteristic of the project, a 4-mile-long drainage tunnel, is featured. This tunnel is being built 100 feet below the northbound service drive from just north of Meyers Avenue to just north of 12 Mile Road. When completed, the drainage tunnel will collect rainwater from the freeway and surface street structures through drainage shafts and it will store and strategically discharge the collected water into the county drain located near 12 Mile Road. This unique design will prevent freeway and local community flooding issues during heavy rain events.

Eliza Update - December 2020

As a follow-up to our October update on Eliza, we wanted to share the latest information.  Eliza has now traveled over 500-ft north from the I-696 Shaft Site (northeast corner of the I-75/I-696 interchange), placing her near the northbound service drive and Brockton Avenue intersection.  Eliza will continue to head north towards the 12 Mile Road Pump Station Shaft that is currently under construction.  Since October, crews installed the remaining sections of "trailing equipment" that includes electrical, hydraulics, communication and ventilation lines.  Eliza will continue her journey to the 12 Mile Road Pump Station Shaft working 20 hours a day.  Once she arrives at the 12 Mile Road Pump Station Shaft in the summer of 2021 she will be relocated back to the I-696 Shaft Site and relaunched, heading south to the Meyers Avenue Shaft Site, which is anticipated to take nine months to complete.

To learn more about Eliza and the work being done for the Tunnel, please view our Tunnel Highlights page here: www.modernize75.com/Project-Highlights-Tunnel

The name will honor a local woman who has made a difference in the world and in particular Oakland County.
